Preventing Children’s Gaming Addiction: Importance of Physical Activity Spaces

Deputy Minister for Population and Family Development, Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka, emphasized the importance of parents staying informed about their children’s interests and engaging in physical activities together to prevent them from becoming addicted to games and gadgets. This message was delivered during the Double Check discussion on the Role of Family Development in Welcoming a Golden Indonesia 2045, organized by the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) in collaboration with Gempita, in Jakarta.

Isyana pointed out that children are drawn to the instant gratification of “cheap dopamine” from activities like scrolling on social media or playing online games, which can lead to addiction. She stressed the need for parents to keep themselves updated on current online applications as children often learn faster than them.

Moreover, Isyana highlighted the significance of outdoor activities and sports in providing dopamine through sunlight exposure. She mentioned that the human body is meant to be in motion, not just to lead a sedentary lifestyle.

In a related initiative, Deputy Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Veronica Tan, introduced the program Ruang Bersama Indonesia (RBI). This program aims to create safe and inclusive spaces for women, children, and communities to empower themselves, learn, play, and foster creativity. Through RBI, Veronica hopes to provide children with access to safe environments, engage them in traditional and creative games, promote sports activities, and steer them away from gadget addiction.
